Creative Space Garden 2009

A small terrace or courtyard garden need not be dull and two dimensional. The Creative Space Garden shows that classic materials used with lush evergreen planting can turn a square into a three dimensional haven incorporating seating, views and a water feature. Strategically placed lighting allows use and views of the garden at any time.

The sawn Oken sandstone paving gives a beautiful smooth terrace, whether used alone or interplanted with camomile (Anthemis nobilis Trenague). Bullnosed steps lead effortlessly from one level to the next, giving a perfect height for an enclosed waterfall.

The pink hues of the Oken sandstone are complemented with the predominantly evergreen planting of green and black foliage, and white, purple and dark red flowers. The circular theme of the main garden is mimicked with spherical plants, like the evergreen Pittosporum tenuifolia Tom Thumb, Agapanthus africanus Albus and Angelica gigas, under planted with Allium christophii.

Taxus baccata columns break up the rear wall and complement the Taxus baccata cloud tree, giving height to the corner of the garden. The cloud tree is surrounded with shade tolerant planting including Acer palmatum dissectum, Polystichum setiferum and Helleborus sternii Blackthorn strain.

The Creative Space Garden is on display at Rock Unique, Sevenoaks, and was built in collaboration with Creative Landscapes.
