Family Garden in Oxford
|
The clients wanted an entertaining area, a cottage flower garden, a vegetable garden, an orchard and a chicken run as well as lots of space for the children to play. The long thin plot allowed for this garden to be separated into many rooms.
The area close to the house was designated for entertaining, with a small breakfast area outside the kitchen, a large terrace on the side of the house, which caught the sun, and a wide shady area behind the house. The front and side gardens are full of brightly coloured roses and perennials and fragrant herbs, while the back garden has light coloured shade tolerant plants.
Raised borders separate the terrace from the apple orchard. A tranquil scene to contemplate from the terrace with many shady trees to hang a hammock between.
Behind a beech hedge lies the children’s play area with a play tower, a marked out badminton or short tennis court, trees for climbing and plenty of space for running.
This leads into the potager via a pergola covered with trained espalier fruit and vines. The centre of the circular pergola contains soft fruit while the vegetables are grown in the raised borders around the edge. |
