<li>Plants for February – Euonymus x fortunei ‘Silver Queen’ (variegated evergreen), Camellia x williamsii hybrids, Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ (fragrant blooms), Helleborus orientalis and Erica (winter-flowering heather).</li>

<li>Start off tuberous begonias, gloxinias and achimenes in damp compost.</li>
<li>Force spring bulbs indoors for early colour.</li>
<li>Prune late flowering shrubs like buddleia, hardy fuchsia, Hydrangea paniculata and santolina.</li>
<li>Prune late flowering clematis to a few inches off the ground.</li>
<li>Re-shape conifers after snow and frost damage.</li>
<li>Start pruning roses mid-month.</li>
<li>Sow vegetables under cloches for early crops.</li>
<li>Plant shallot bulbs late this month.</li>
<li>Plan tomatoes and other tender greenhouse crops.</li>
<li>Force rhubarb for early pickings.</li>
<li>Plant currants, gooseberries and raspberries.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Government is hoping to steer the public to use more environmentally friendly products in their front gardens.</p>
<p>From October 2008, home owners in England must apply for planning permission if they want to pave their front garden with an impermeable material, such as asphalt. Planning permission is not required if you use a porous or permeable product  which will reduce flooding and its subsequent damage.</p>
